Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics
Dept. of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics

Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics are specialized fields within dentistry that focus on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental problems related to tooth decay (caries), trauma, and diseases of the dental pulp and surrounding tissues.

Here's a detailed overview of both fields:

A. Conservative Dentistry:

  1. Tooth Preservation:
Conservative Dentistry, also known as Operative Dentistry, aims to conserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible while restoring damaged or decayed teeth.
  2. Diagnosis and Treatment Planning:
Conservative dentists diagnose dental issues such as cavities, cracks, or defective restorations and develop treatment plans to restore the affected teeth to their optimal function and appearance.
  3. Restorative Procedures:
This involves various restorative procedures, including fillings, inlays, onlays, and crowns, to repair and restore teeth affected by decay, fractures, or other defects.
  4. Aesthetic Dentistry:
Conservative dentists also focus on aesthetic or cosmetic aspects of restorations, ensuring that the restorations match the natural color and shape of the teeth for an appealing appearance.
  5. Preventive Dentistry:
They emphasize preventive measures to maintain good oral health, such as fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and patient education on proper oral hygiene practices.

B. Endodontics:

  1. Dental Pulp and Periapical Area:
Endodontics deals with the study and management of diseases and conditions related to the dental pulp, which is the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels, as well as the tissues around the tooth's root (periapical area).
  2. Root Canal Treatment:
Endodontists perform root canal treatments to remove infected or inflamed dental pulp, clean and shape the root canals, and fill them with an inert material to save the tooth and relieve pain.
  3. Diagnosis and Treatment Planning:
They diagnose and determine the appropriate treatment for conditions such as irreversible pulpitis, dental abscesses, and traumatic dental injuries affecting the dental pulp.
  4. Retreatment and Surgery:
Endodontists perform retreatment of failed root canals and surgical procedures like apicoectomy (removal of the tooth's apex) if traditional root canal treatment is unsuccessful.
  5. Trauma Management:
Endodontists handle traumatic injuries to the teeth, including luxation, avulsion, and root fractures, with the aim of saving the affected teeth through various endodontic procedures.

Both Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics play pivotal roles in preserving natural teeth, alleviating pain, and maintaining overall oral health. While Conservative Dentistry focuses on restoring teeth with minimal intervention, Endodontics is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of dental pulp and periapical diseases to save teeth from extraction. These specialties often intersect in cases where restorative procedures are coupled with root canal treatments to maintain and enhance dental health.
