Periodontics & Oral Implantology
Dept. of Periodontics & Community Dentistry

Periodontics and Oral Implantology are two specialized fields within dentistry that focus on the health of the supporting structures of the teeth, primarily the gums and bone. They involve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and conditions related to the gums (periodontics) and the placement and maintenance of dental implants (oral implantology).

Here's a breakdown of both fields:

A. Periodontics:

  1. Gum Health:
Periodontics focuses on the health of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, known as the periodontium.
  2. Diagnosis and Treatment:
Periodontists diagnose and treat gum diseases, gingivitis, and periodontitis. This includes procedures like scaling and root planing, gum grafts, and regenerative procedures.
  3. Periodontal Surgery:
Periodontists perform surgical procedures to treat advanced gum disease, manage gum recession, and restore gum and bone health around teeth.
  4. Maintenance:
Periodontists provide ongoing maintenance and follow-up care to manage and monitor patients with gum disease, ensuring its stability and preventing further progression.

B. Oral Implantology:

  1. Dental Implants:
Oral Implantology involves the placement, restoration, and maintenance of dental implants, which are artificial tooth roots used to support replacement teeth.
  2. Implant Placement:
Oral implantologists surgically place dental implants into the jawbone, providing a stable foundation for dental prosthetics like crowns, bridges, or dentures.
  3. Bone Grafting:
In cases of inadequate bone volume, oral implantologists may perform bone grafting procedures to augment the bone and create a suitable site for implant placement.
  4. Implant Restoration:
After the implants have integrated with the bone, oral implantologists design and place the appropriate dental prosthetics on top of the implants, such as crowns or dentures.
  5. Implant Maintenance:
They also oversee the long-term maintenance and care of the dental implants, ensuring their functionality and longevity.

Both Periodontics and Oral Implantology are crucial for maintaining oral health, restoring lost teeth, and enhancing the overall quality of life for patients by improving their ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently. Additionally, these fields often intersect, as dental implants are placed into the jawbone and require healthy gums and sufficient bone for successful integration and function. Periodontal health is fundamental for the long-term success of dental implants.
